At Yah’s Apothecary, we teach herbalism through a clinical lens that connects the body, the plant, and the person being served. Instead of memorizing random herbs for random symptoms, our students learn seven foundational subjects that help them understand how healing actually works. Anatomy – Understanding the physical structure of the body and how organs and systems are organized. Physiology – Learning how the body functions and how systems communicate and maintain balance. Pathophysiology – Studying how and why disease develops so practitioners can identify root causes instead of only addressing symptoms. Endocrinology – Exploring hormones and the glands that regulate metabolism, mood, reproduction, and stress. Botany – Understanding how plants grow, their structures, and how to properly identify medicinal species. Phytochemistry – Studying the chemical compounds within plants that create therapeutic actions in the body. Nutrition – Learning how food and nutrients support healing, restore deficiencies, and strengthen body systems. Together, these seven subjects create the foundation for responsible herbal practice. By understanding the body, the plant, and the chemistry that connects them, students are able to create informed protocols and provide meaningful support for their households and communities.

This method, which I call the T.E.A. Method™, isn't just for teas despite its name. It applies to any blend. After years of creating my own formulas and teaching, I’ve realized that this is where many herbalists struggle. My method simplifies this process and ensures effective results. The Components of the T.E.A. Method™ Understanding how to create your own herbal blends can be challenging. Use the 3 Ts when creating a beverage blend. Use the entire method for medicinal blending. Taste, Texture, Time Energetics Affinity, Action Taste: Ensuring your blend has a variety of tastes that interact with different parts of the body. Textures: Adding diverse textures and colors to make the blend more appealing. Time: Properly steeping or boiling herbs for the recommended time length to retain their medicinal properties. Energetics: Considering the energy qualities of the herbs, body and illness to return the body to a state of wholeness. Affinity: Understanding the specific organs or systems the herbs target. Action: Knowing the specific actions of herbs and how they work within the blend.

One of the biggest mistakes new herbalists make is assuming every herb belongs at every stage of an illness. Kitchen Backyard/Garden Forest Abroad I think it’s important to familiarize yourself with the herbs that are closest to you. By starting in the kitchen, you are starting with the herbs that you are most comfortable with and when you need them, you can easily access them. The garden is the next level of familiarity, these are herbs that we see and interact with on a daily basis. Many of these herbs are pretty safe which is important as you are still developing your herbal knowledge. Once you feel confident, you can fully immerse yourself in the wild growing native and “weedy” medicinal plants that you find in trails, parks and forests. Imported plants will always be there but I encourage you to find out about all of the plants that you are most likely to find first!

Specific herbs are used for a purpose. They have little to no side effects when used properly. Low dose herbs are herbs that are best used by knowledgeable practitioners. External use only herbs, while these remedies may be used internally, with caution and in small amounts, they are typically used for external use.
