Why Most Herbalists Don’t Make Money (And How I Flipped That)

Let’s Get Honest:
Most Herbalists Are Not Making Money
Not because they’re lazy or unskilled as some might suspect.... but because the herbal world quietly expects us to serve without charging, build without structure, and “give back” until we burn out. I see it all the time. Brilliant women who’ve studied for years, who can break down plant energetics and craft beautiful medicine, still working full-time jobs they hate while their herbal gifts sit on a shelf.
And I get it. The world treats herbalists like we should just be “happy to help.” People expect free tea blends, unpaid workshops, and 90-minute consultations in the DMs. Even in professional spaces, we’re offered “visibility” in exchange for guest teaching instead of a check.
Let’s call it what it is: exploitation disguised as opportunity.
You Can’t Pay Bills with Exposure

You don’t get a grocery discount because you shared a free recipe in a Facebook group. The electric company doesn’t care that you helped someone with their blood pressure. So why are we operating like this? Do we truly believe our work doesn’t deserve to be compensated?
I used to say yes to everything—free summits, free podcast interviews, free collaborations. I thought it would lead to clients or credibility. Sometimes it did. But more often, I was pouring from an empty cup, losing time, and still struggling to hit my income goals. Eventually, I realized: if I don’t respect my value, I can’t expect anyone else to.
Most Herbalists Don’t Have a Business—They Have a Hobby with Receipts

And that’s not shade. That’s the truth. You might be buying ingredients, printing labels, taking classes, and posting content—but if you don’t have a clear offer, audience, system, and sales plan… You don’t have a business. You have a very expensive and exhausting side project.
What changed everything for me? I stopped building from emotion and started building from structure. I picked one clear offer. I created a path to walk my clients through. I tracked my content. I automated my emails. And most of all—I stopped letting people drain me in the name of “supporting the community.”
Healing Can Be Sacred and Sustainable

We’ve been trained to believe that making money with our gift somehow cheapens it. That if we really cared, we’d just give it all away. But I believe Yah calls us to steward our gift well, and that includes multiplying it. How can we serve our people if we’re constantly stressed, behind, or broke?
When I flipped my mindset—from giving everything away to building a sustainable system—my whole business changed. I could finally show up with peace, provide for my family, and still serve those in need through scholarships, pay-it-forward options, and donations. But that freedom came from structure, not over-sacrifice.
Here’s What You Can Do Right Now

Pick one paid offer
Don’t start with 10. Just one. Make it clear, valuable, and results-driven.
Say no to unpaid requests
If someone wants your time, they need to invest in it.
Build a system
Create an email funnel. Set up a booking link. Automate your delivery. Make it easy for people to buy from you.

Track your time and income
Know what’s working and what’s draining you.
Create a plan
Don’t just “show up” on Instagram—know what you’re promoting, who you’re talking to, and where it’s leading.
These steps aren’t glamorous. But they work. And once you have them in place, the unpaid burnout cycle breaks.
