Herbalism can feel overwhelming sometimes, especially when you're looking at all the fancy recipes and long lists of ingredients. But let me tell you something: simplicity is often the best approach. Over the years, I've learned that simpler herbal formulas are not only easier to make, but they’re also often more effective.
The key is to focus on herbs that work well together without complicating things. When you're starting out, or even if you've been practicing for a while, sticking to simpler formulas will give you more confidence and clarity. You don’t need a dozen herbs to make a difference—just a few quality ones that complement each other and work towards the same goal.
Herbalism is about understanding how each herb helps, and combining them in a way that makes sense for the issue you’re trying to address.
Start by focusing on the core benefits of each herb you choose.
Take raspberry leaf, for example—a personal favorite of mine. It’s simple, but powerful. It helps tone the uterus, regulate cycles, and provide gentle nourishment (vitamins and minerals), all by itself.
You don’t need to add a bunch of herbs to make it work. And the same goes for other herbs you use. Learn about their individual strengths and pair them with herbs that bring out their best qualities.
Get to know it deeply, understand its energetics,
and choose other herbs that enhance its benefits, not overshadow them.
Why Simplicity Matters

Enhanced Effectiveness
When you use fewer herbs, it’s easier to focus on their specific actions and energetics. Each herb has its own unique properties, and when carefully combined, a few can work harmoniously to create powerful results. Overloading a formula may dilute its effectiveness or create conflicting actions.
Easier to Track Results
With simple formulas, it’s much easier to observe how each herb is working. If a client experiences a reaction, you can pinpoint the cause. Complex blends make this process far more challenging.
Accessible and Cost-Effective
Simplified blends are often more affordable and accessible. They reduce the need for a large inventory of herbs, making it easier for beginners and clients to replicate or maintain their own remedies.
How to Embrace Simplicity in Your Herbal Formulas:

Pick Herbs for the Job: Focus on the herbs that directly address the issue you're working on. The more you get to know each herb, the easier it becomes to build a formula that’s effective without being overly complicated.
Start with the Basics: Master a few foundational herbs that you can always rely on. Once you’re comfortable with those, you’ll naturally start simplifying your blends. It’s often the basic herbs that work best.
Use the T.E.A. Method: My T.E.A. method for making herbal blends (Taste, Texture, Time, Energetics, Affinity, and Action) is a great way to keep things simple while making sure your herbs are balanced. You don’t need to overcomplicate it—just choose herbs that match the right criteria.
Actionable Steps to Embrace Simplicity

Start with a Goal: Clearly define what the formula is meant to address. Choose 1-3 herbs that specifically target this goal.
Focus on Energetics: Consider the warmth, coolness, dryness, or moistening qualities of the
herbs. Align them with the body’s needs.
Master Single Herbs First: Before creating blends, spend time learning and using herbs individually to understand their properties.
Experiment and Refine: Test your formulas on a small scale and adjust based on feedback and results. Simplicity doesn’t mean stagnant—keep refining your craft.
The Beauty of Simplicity
As herbalists, we sometimes feel pressure to create elaborate formulas to prove our knowledge or

expertise. But simplicity shows confidence and clarity. A three-herb blend for sleep, like chamomile, lemon balm, and passionflower, can rival any complicated concoction in its effectiveness. Simplicity invites connection—with the plants, the person, and the process itself.
By embracing simplicity, you can also make your practice more accessible and effective for yourself and others. The beauty of herbalism lies not in the complexity of the formulas but in their ability to work in harmony with the body’s natural rhythms.
So, the next time you’re crafting a herbal formula, remember: less is often more. It’s not about throwing in every herb you can find—it's about crafting simple, intentional blends that help restore balance and support your health journey. And as always, when in doubt, trust your intuition and God-given wisdom to guide you. Simplicity will lead the way.
