What Herbs Are Safe for Pregnancy and Breastfeeding?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are times when extra care is needed in choosing what goes into your body, and herbs are no exception. While many herbs can provide support during this time, others may not be safe. It's important to understand which herbs can be beneficial for your health and your baby's well-being, and which ones to avoid.

Safe Herbs During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Ginger

Ginger is well-known for helping with nausea and morning sickness during pregnancy. It’s also gentle and safe when consumed in moderate amounts. It can also help with digestive issues and can be soothing for both mom and baby.

Raspberry Leaf

Raspberry leaf is commonly used during pregnancy to tone the uterine muscles and prepare the body for labor. It’s also great for supporting overall reproductive health. Many herbalists recommend raspberry leaf tea during the second and third trimesters.

Chamomile

Chamomile is known for its calming properties, making it helpful for reducing stress and anxiety during pregnancy. It also aids digestion and can help with sleep. Just be sure to consume it in moderation.

Peppermint

Peppermint is another great herb for digestive health, especially to soothe nausea and indigestion during pregnancy. It's also great for clearing the airways, but like other herbs, it should be used in moderation.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm has a mild sedative effect and can help with anxiety and restlessness. It’s also gentle on the stomach and can help with digestive discomfort, which is often common during pregnancy.

Herbs to Avoid During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Pennyroyal

Pennyroyal is a herb that can stimulate menstruation and is known to cause miscarriage, especially in high doses. It should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Black Cohosh

Black cohosh is sometimes used to induce labor, but it can cause contractions before the body is ready. It’s not recommended during pregnancy, especially early on, as it can stimulate uterine contractions.

Dong Quai

Dong quai is known as a “female tonic,” but it has powerful effects on hormones and the uterus. It can stimulate uterine contractions, so it’s best to avoid it during pregnancy.

Blue Cohosh

Similar to black cohosh, blue cohosh is often used to induce labor but should not be used unless under the supervision of a healthcare provider. It may cause harmful effects on both pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Mugwort

While mugwort is useful for digestive support and as a mild sedative, it’s also a strong uterine stimulant and can lead to miscarriage or preterm labor.

General Guidelines

  • Consult with a professional: Always consult a healthcare provider before using any herbs, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding. They can guide you on the proper dosages and whether a specific herb is safe for your unique needs.

  • Moderation is key: Even safe herbs should be used in moderation, as too much of a good thing can still be harmful.

  • Consider your body’s response: Just because an herb is generally considered safe doesn’t mean it will work the same for everyone. Be mindful of your body’s reactions to different herbs.
