Calendula
Calendula officinalis
Calendula is probably most known for its skin benefits. It is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antifungal and astringent. Calendula is used externally for the healing of wounds, burns, ulcers and hemorrhoids. On the skin, the oil can help with pre-mature aging, inflammation and pain. It is used in salves, lotions and creams for everything from burns and bruises to diaper rash.
Contraindications: Calendula is usually contraindicated during pregnancy though it is thought to be safe when used topically.
Contraindications: Valerian can cause drowsiness. Don’t take valerian before operating machinery. A percentage of people (estimated at as much as 15%) have an opposite reaction to valerian where they are stimulated rather than relaxed. Many people find the smell of valerian root to be offensive.
