Why Google Is Hurting Your Herbal Journey
(And What to Do Instead)
I have to call it out —some of y’all are spending hours piecing together Pinterest recipes, skimming random blogs, and trusting strangers on the internet more than your own body. That’s not real herbalism. If you actually want to heal, if you want to help your family and one day be trusted as an herbalist or holistic practitioner, then you have to stop depending on Google. It’s not built for this.

When you type in something like “herbs for hormonal imbalance,” Google gives you a lazy list of 10 random herbs. But it doesn’t ask the real questions. Are your hormones high or low? Are you bleeding too much or not at all? Is your liver sluggish? Do you need something warming or cooling? Google can’t assess your constitution, your body systems, or your stage of illness. It gives surface answers, but healing requires discernment. And most folks never get that far because they’re too busy trying to follow shortcuts.

Everyone Has an Opinion,
But Not Everyone Has Wisdom
Here’s another hard truth—anybody can post a video or blog about herbs. But that doesn’t mean they’ve put in the work. I’ve seen folks suggest cayenne for hot skin rashes, peppermint for every gut issue, and vaginal steaming when a liver detox was needed. That kind of advice can actually hurt people. And most of the time, there’s no mention of contraindications, dosages, or how the herbs even work.
That’s why you might try an herb and end up with side effects like diarrhea—or worse. Because someone said “this herb is great,” but never explained how to use it safely or effectively. They’re offering knowledge, but not wisdom. Wisdom comes from practice, observation, and discernment. It’s not just about knowing what to use, but when to use it, why, how much, and for who.
Google Keeps You in a Memorization Mindset

The third problem? Google traps you in a mindset of memorization. And let’s be honest—that’s what burns most people out. Trying to memorize 1000 herbs and Latin names will leave you overwhelmed, confused, and stuck. Real herbalism isn’t about memorizing—it’s about learning to recognize patterns, actions, energetics, and the body’s needs as a system.
The Bible says in Proverbs 15:14, “The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.” That’s what scrolling through random info is—foolishness. It’s not that herbs don’t work. It’s that people don’t understand how to use them. If you want to walk in this as your calling, you have to do more than just Google. You need to know how to think—not just copy.

What You Should Do Instead
Start by asking better questions. What’s going on in the body system? What’s the constitution of the person? What stage of illness are we in? Learn herbs by their actions, energetics, affinities, and biblical alignment—not just by name. Use books written by trusted herbalists, and even then, don’t rely on just reading. Taste the herbs. Journal what happens. Observe your own body and your clients.
That’s the work.
