Family Healthcare with Herbs: Tips for Busy Moms

As moms, we wear many hats—nurse, chef, counselor, and everything in between. When it comes to keeping our families healthy, it can feel overwhelming to juggle it all, especially with all the options out there. Herbal remedies can be a game-changer, but how do you fit them into an already jam-packed schedule? Here are some tips that have worked for me—because, let's be real, if it’s not practical, it’s not happening!

1. Simplify Your Herbal Cabinet

  • Tip: Instead of stocking every herb under the sun, stick to a core few that are versatile and easy to use. Think of it like your spice cabinet—you don't need every spice; just the ones you use most often. Herbs like chamomile, ginger, and peppermint are great starters because they can cover a wide range of needs, from upset tummies to stress relief. Get your kids involved by letting them label jars or help with simple preparations. They’ll love it, and it’s a great way to teach them about natural healing.

2. Make Herbal Remedies a Family Affair

  • Tip: Turn herbal remedy prep into family bonding time. For example, if you're making elderberry syrup, let the little ones stir the pot (with supervision, of course!). It’s a fun way to spend time together, and they’ll be more likely to take the remedies they helped create. You can even start a family herbal journal where everyone writes down what they took and how they felt afterward—this can be a great way to track what works best for your family.

3. Sneak Herbs into Everyday Foods

  • Tip: Not everyone in the family may be thrilled about drinking herbal teas or taking tinctures. My trick? Sneak herbs into foods they already love. Add finely chopped nettles or dandelion greens to your pasta sauces, soups, or smoothies. The taste is subtle, but the health benefits are significant. Plus, it’s a sneaky way to up their veggie intake without a fight!

4. Herbal Remedies on the Go

  • Tip: As a mom, you’re probably always on the move. Create a small “herbal first aid kit” to keep in your bag. Include basics like a lavender roll-on for bumps and scrapes, a small bottle of rescue remedy for stressful moments, and some ginger chews for queasy tummies. It doesn’t have to be elaborate—just a few essentials that can keep you and the kids covered when you’re out and about.

5. Teach Kids to Recognize and Use Herbs

  • Tip: Take a nature walk with your kids and point out common herbs like plantain or dandelion. Show them how to identify these plants and explain their uses. This doesn’t have to be a formal lesson—just casual conversations while you’re outside. Over time, they’ll learn to recognize these plants on their own and feel more connected to the natural world. It’s a skill that will benefit them for life.

6. Embrace the Learning Curve

  • Tip: Don’t stress about knowing everything. Herbalism is a journey, and it’s okay to start small. Focus on learning about one herb at a time and how it can benefit your family. Keep a simple notebook or digital herb journal where you jot down what you’ve learned and what worked for your family. Over time, you’ll build up your knowledge base, and your confidence will grow.

7. Create Herbal Traditions

  • Tip: Start small herbal traditions in your family. Maybe it's a calming chamomile tea before bed, or a weekly “herbal crafting” day where you make something simple like lip balm or herbal bath salts. These little traditions not only promote wellness but also create special moments that your family will remember.

As a mother of 3 small children, it's very rare that I even get 5-10 minutes alone in the kitchen! And those times that I do have a bit of time, I'm usually multi-tasking, stirring pots or chopping veggies.

Every second is precious, and my hands are already full!

Here's what I don't have time for...

pulling out books,

fumbling through pages,

or looking through an index to find that recipe that I said I wanted to make.

🚫

I don't want my books getting ruined when food splatters or spills,

I hate when I've mistakenly added a big food fingerprint onto a page,

and if I'm honest, I've often forgotten that I have a recipe box in my kitchen.

I want to work smarter not harder!

BUT

This isn't something unique to me, a lot of moms struggle with juggling time and responsibilities.

However, I am no longer one of them.

Now instead of taking half the time getting out a book and book stand, 🤳🏾

I just pull up a bookmarked recipe on my phone!

I can easily scroll through recipes that are sorted alphabetically and by ingredient.

This is so convenient!

I can choose what I want to make based on the time that I have each day, and the best part is that there are close to 200 recipes waiting for me to try, so I'll never get bored!
