Confronting PCOS: Empowering Black Women's Health

Black women are disproportionately affected by PCOS and its symptoms. In this blog and video, we'll discuss some of holistic approaches that are commonly used to treat PCOS and how they can help you. If you're struggling with PCOS and want to find out more about herbs that can help you, then this video is for you!

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a common hormonal disorder that affects millions of women worldwide. Among those impacted, black women face unique challenges, as they have a higher likelihood of experiencing PCOS and its associated complications.

PCOS can have a disproportionate impact on black women, leading to lower chances of pregnancy, a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, and an increased rate of hirsutism, the growth of excess hair in unwanted areas.

So, what exactly is PCOS? PCOS is a condition in which hormonal imbalances disrupt the normal functioning of the ovaries. Women with PCOS often have enlarged ovaries that contain small cysts. This hormonal imbalance can cause a range of symptoms, including irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain, acne, and hair loss.

The exact cause of PCOS is still not fully understood. However, it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Insulin resistance, a condition in which the body has difficulty processing insulin, is commonly associated with PCOS. This insulin connection can lead to increased insulin levels in the body, affecting hormone production and contributing to the development of PCOS.

PCOS is not just about reproductive health. It is also linked to a higher risk of developing other conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.

While herbal reproductive support can be beneficial, addressing PCOS requires a comprehensive protocol that addresses the multiple imbalances present in the body. This includes supporting the pancreas and promoting healthy insulin levels. It's crucial to understand that solely relying on topical solutions to improve hair growth caused by PCOS may lead to temporary improvements.

However, since PCOS continues to cause hair loss, the problem will likely persist.

This predisposition to hair loss is primarily due to DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Women with PCOS tend to have higher levels of androgens, which are male hormones. DHT, specifically, is associated with male pattern baldness, which is why women with PCOS are more likely to experience this symptom.

Because we also talked about insulin, which fuels the level of androgens in the body, it is important to also look to reverse pancreatic imbalances Pancreatic support can involve adopting a healthy diet, exercising regularly, managing stress levels (sometimes blood sugar spikes because of stress), and incorporating specific herbs that support pancreatic function. These herbs, along with lifestyle modifications, can help promote insulin sensitivity and hormonal balance in women with PCOS.

It is important for black women with PCOS to have access to appropriate healthcare resources and support. By addressing the root causes of PCOS and implementing a comprehensive protocol, we can work towards reducing the risks associated with PCOS, promoting fertility, and improving overall well-being.

Together, we can empower black women with PCOS to navigate their health journey and achieve a balanced and vibrant life.
