Boost Energy and Beat Cramps: Best Foods to Eat During Your Menstrual Cycle

What are the best foods to eat during your menstrual cycle?

We'll cover foods rich in iron, herbs to ease cramping, energy-boosting options, and even touch on what happens inside of your body during menstruation. So, let's get started!

Let's quickly go over what happens in your body during menstruation."

"During your menstrual cycle, your body goes through several phases: menstruation, follicular phase, ovulation, and luteal phase. Menstruation is the shedding of the uterine lining, and it's during this time that many of us experience period-related symptoms."

First up, let's talk about foods that are high in iron. During your period, your body loses iron through blood loss. Iron is crucial for maintaining energy levels and overall well-being, especially during your period." Consuming iron-rich foods can help replenish your body and prevent feelings of fatigue and weakness.

Natural sources of plant-based iron include Leafy greens like spinach, beans and legumes like lentils, and grains like quinoa and spelt. I want to note that there are two types of iton. Non-heme iron is found in plants and is less readily absorbed than heme iron which comes from animals. Some ways to improve the absorption of non-heme iron from plant-based sources include consuming vitamin C-rich foods alongside iron-rich foods, avoiding the consumption of calcium-rich foods, and cooking in cast-iron cookware, which can increase the iron content of certain foods.

I have a dedicated video on iron that I will link that you can check out next

"Next, let's explore herbal remedies for easing cramps. Menstrual cramps can be uncomfortable, but certain herbs have been known to provide relief."

"Ginger, chamomile, and peppermint are fantastic options. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that can help alleviate cramps. "

Chamomile's soothing effects can help relax muscles and reduce discomfort. Peppermint is known to have muscle-relaxing properties, which can be especially beneficial during this time." I do want to mention that even though cramps are common, having them every cycle is not normal. While these herbs will help, you’ll want to do some deeper investigative work into what the root cause is.

let's delve into the realm of herbs that can uplift your mood during your menstrual cycle. Hormonal fluctuations can sometimes bring about feelings of fatigue and mood swings, but these herbs can be your allies in maintaining a positive mood.

Damiana, for a Mood Elevator: Damiana, known for its mood-enhancing properties, can provide you with a gentle lift during your menstrual cycle. This herb has a reputation for promoting relaxation and can help ease feelings of tension or unease that occasionally accompany hormonal shifts.

Cardamom, the Cheerful Spice: Cardamom, with its warm and inviting aroma, can work wonders on your mood. This spice is believed to have mood-boosting qualities and can infuse your dishes or beverages with a delightful and comforting essence.

"Lastly, let's touch on foods to avoid during your period. While there are no strict rules, it's a good idea to steer clear of certain foods that could potentially worsen bloating, mood swings, and other symptoms."

"Processed snacks and sugary foods might lead to inflammation and worsen bloating. Excessive caffeine intake can disrupt sleep and potentially intensify mood swings. It's always a good practice to listen to your body and make choices that support your well-being."

"And there you have it!

Remember, everyone's body is unique, so it's important to pay attention to how different foods affect you during your period. Incorporating iron-rich foods, soothing herbs, energy-boosting options, and being mindful of your choices can help you navigate this time with greater comfort and ease. Thanks for tuning in, and we'll see you in the next video!"
